Hard-Surfacing Debarking Knife Using Colmonoy® 88 and Fusewelder™

Warren Lewis returns with another demo in our latest video. This time he’s spraying a debarking knife with Colmonoy® 88, a nickel-based hardsurfacing alloy, using the Fusewelder™ Torch. The Fusewelder™ Torch is a special oxy-acetylene torch which preheats the base metal, sprays powdered alloy and fuses deposits to the workpiece – all with one integrated unit.

Debarking knives are widely used in the timber, paper & pulp industries to remove bark from tree trunks. Due to the highly abrasive and high impact nature of the process, new knives, which are coated with tungsten carbide and deposited using manual metal arc electrodes, last around two weeks.

was chosen for the debarking knives application due to its wear, heat & corrosion-resistance. It’s a unique alloy which contains chromium/tungsten borides and carbides for maximum abrasion and corrosion resistance. Colmonoy® 88 is used for high-temperature, highly abrasive applications.

With a new coating of Colmonoy® 88 and application via the Fuseweld™ process, the average life of the debarking knife is now three weeks - a 50% improvement! The spraying process time is also dramatically reduced from 20 minutes per blade to 5 minutes per blade. Improvements were also noticed at the final grinding stage, where the blade receives a new edge which is ground using a hand grinder. The accuracy of the Fuseweld™ process means that the grinding was more efficient. The customer's engineers achieved their goal of extending service life and boosting process efficiency.

Colmonoy® 88 applied by Fusewelder™ Torch achieves:

• A 50% improvement in service life of Debarking Knives
• Reduced spray process time – 20 minutes to 5 minutes per blade
• Efficiencies gained during final grinding stage due accuracy of powder application
